When I received an email from my Japanese guest mother, that she and her younger daughter will come to Germany for just four days in early May 2004 I had to think hard where to go and what to see in such a short time. As they already had seen famous sights in Bavaria like castle Neuschwanstein or mid age town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber I had to find a different region, famous enough and easy to go around. Coming on a plane to Frankfurt, I chose the Eifel region in order to save access time for them. I never visited the region by myself, just saw awesome documentary films on tv. So it was time to visit a remarkable German landscape.

Two travel guide books, several maps and a countless number of websites were consulted. At the end the route was a full loop of 1800 km from Frankfurt along the Rhine river down to Koblenz, besides the Mosel river up to Trier, a zigzag course through the Eifel with a sidetrip to Belgium, straight then to Alt-beer capital of Düsseldorf, returning through Köln back to Frankfurt Airport.

A really packed but rich tour of city sightseeing, visits of castles and other relicts of ancient times, intersting food of different regional flavour and of course the great landscapes along the river banks.
