Jona war ein Prophet, ein Diener Gottes. Eines Tages sprach Gott zu ihm: "Jona, gehe für mich in die Stadt Ninive. Die Menschen dort tun viele häßliche Dinge. Sag ihnen, daß ich ihre schlechten Taten sehe und daß ich ihre Stadt in vierzig Tagen zerstören werde, sollten sie sich nicht bessern." Jona hatte aber überhaupt keine Lust nach Ninive zu gehen. Warum sollte er die Menschen warnen? Wenn sie so schlecht waren, dann war es schließlich ihre eigene Schuld, wenn Gott die Stadt zerstörte!
Jona was a prophet, a servant of God. One day God said to him: "Jona, go for me to the city Ninive. The people there are doing many ugly things. Say them, that I can see their bad doings und that I will destroy their city in forty days, if they are not improving." Jona was not keen at all to go to Ninive. Why should he wran the people? If they were such bad, then it was their own fault, when God destroys the city!

So beschloß Jona, vor Gott zu fliehen. Er packte seine Sachen und machte sich auf den Weg. Tag und Nacht wanderte er, bis er schließlich ans Meer kam.
So Jona decided, to escape from God. He packed his belongings and went on his way. Day and night he walked, until he finally arrived at the sea.

Dort fand Jona ein Schiff, daß ihn mitnahm. Sie fuhren hinaus aufs weite Meer. Es war wunderbar, auf dem Deck des Schiffes zu stehen, doch die Angst, von Gott gesehen zu werden, blieb. Deshalb ging Jona lieber unter Deck, in seine Kabine. Er legte sich schlafen, um seine Sorgen zu vergessen.
There Jona found a ship, that took him along. They got out on the wide sea It was wunderful to stand on the deck of the ship, but the fear remained to be seen by God. Therefore Jona better went below deck, into his cabin. He layed down for sleeping, to forget his worries.

Aber Gott hatte natürlich die ganze Zeit gewußt, wo Jona war! Und er rief einen fürchterlichen Sturm herbei, der das Schiff fast zerschmetterte.
But of course God knew all the time where Jona were! And he sent for a terrible storm, which almost smashed the ship.

Der Sturm weckte Jona. Er wußte sofort, wer ihn geschickt hatte. Hastig stürzte er an Deck und rief den Männern zu: "Werft mich ins Meer! Schnell, bevor das Schiff untergeht! Es ist meine Schuld, daß dieser Sturm gekommen ist. Ich habe nämlich etwas Schlimmes getan und jetzt will Gott mich strafen."
The storm woke up Jona. He knew at once, he sent it. He hasty rushed to the deckand cried to the men: "Throw me into the sea! Quickly, before the ship will sinking! It's my fault, that this storm arrived. That is to say I have done something evil and now God wants to punish me."

Obwohl die Schiffsleute noch nie so einen Sturm erlebt hatten und vor Angst schlotterten, sagten sie: "Wir schaffen das schon, Jona." Und sie holtem schnell die Segel ein und ruderten mit aller Kraft, um dem Sturm zu entkommen. Aber es hatte keinen Sinn. Schließlich blieb ihnen nichts anderes übrig. Sie mußten Jona ins Meer werfen.
Although the seamen never experienced such a storm and shivered from fear, they said: "We will manage it, Jona" And they stroke the sails and sculled with all their power, to escape from the storm. But it didn´t make sense. Finally nothing else remained to be done. They had to throw Jona into the sea.

Sofort war der Sturm vorbei. Jona aber war verschwunden. Doch ertrunken war er nicht. Gott hatte einen riesigen Wal geschickt und der hatte Jona verschluckt.
Immediately the storm was over. But Jona had disappeared. But he was not drowned. God had sent a huge whale and this had swallowed Jona.

Im Inneren des Wals war es stockfinster. Jona bekam große Angst und er betete zu Gott. Denn er wußte jetzt, daß Gott ihn überall, auch hier im Bauch des Wales, sehen konnte.
Inside the whale it was pitch-dark. Jona became very afraid and prayed to God. Because now he knew, that God could see him everywhere, also here in the belly of the whale.

Und Gott hatte Mitleid mit ihm. Er lenkte den Wal an das Ufer des Meeres und der Wal spie Jona mit einem großen Schwall Wasser aus. Als seine Kleider trocken waren, machte er sich auf nach Ninive.
And God had pity on him. He directed the whale to the banks of the sea and the whale spitted out Jona with a big splash of water. When his clothes were dry, he started onto Ninive.

Als er in Ninive war, sprach Jona sofort mit den Menschen: "Wenn ihr euch nicht bessert, dann wird Gott euch bestrafen und die Stadt in vierzig Tagen zerstören."
When he was in Ninve, Jona immediately spoke to the people: "If you are not improving, then God will punish you and will destroy the city in 40 days."

Da bekamen die Menschen einen furchtbaren Schreck und dachten über ihre Taten nach. Und sie bereuten alles und baten Gott um Vergebung.
Then the people became afraid and thought about their doings. And they regret everything and asked God for forgiveness.

Jona wollte die Zerstörung der Stadt aus sicherer Entfernung beobachten. Während er wartete, ließ Gott einen Baum wachsen, der ihm Schatten spendete. Am nächsten Tag aber ließ Gott den Baum verdorren. Jona saß nun in der heißen Sonne und ärgerte sich. Er wartete und wartete, doch Gott hatte Ninive noch immer nicht zerstört. Da wurde Jona richtig wütend. Gott sprach zu ihm: "Jona, dir tut es Leid, daß dieser Baum vertrocknet ist, um den du dich noch nicht einmal bemüht hast. Und mir sollen die Menschen von Ninive nicht Leid tun, um die ich mich seit Jahren sorge?"
Jona wanted to watch the destroying of the city from a safe distant point. While he was waiting, God let grow a tree, which gave shadow to him. But the next day God let drought the tree. Now Jona sit under the hot sunshine and was angry. He waited and waited, but God didn't yet destroyed Ninive. Then Jona became really enraged. God said to him: "Jona, you are sorry about that this tree drought, which you never took care. And I don´t have to be sorry about the people of Ninive, who I take care since years?"

Da verstand Jona, daß Gott Mitleid mit den Menschen von Ninive hatte, so wie er auch Mitleid mit ihm gehabt hatte. Und er erkannte die Güte und Barmherzigkeit Gottes.
Then Jona understood, that God had compassion for the people of Ninive, like He had compassion for him. And he realized the bless and mercy of God.
